AUTO INSURANCE · VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA

Auto insurance in South Hill, for drivers on both sides of the line.

Both states raised their minimum limits in 2025, and Virginia stopped letting anyone drive uninsured. Cars, trucks, teen drivers and the pickup that also goes to work, written from one office licensed in both states.

THE FIRST THING TO KNOW

The state minimum is what the state requires. It is not what protects you.

Virginia's minimum is now $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage. North Carolina's is $50,000, $100,000 and $50,000. Those are the highest either state has ever required, and $25,000 still does not replace many of the trucks on Route 58.

A minimum limits policy is a policy that stops paying while the claim is still going. The difference between the minimum and a limit that actually covers a bad wreck is usually a few dollars a month, which is the conversation we would rather have before the wreck than after.

WHAT THE POLICY IS MADE OF

Six parts, and you choose the size of each one.

Liability

What you owe other people when the wreck is your fault: their injuries, their car, their fence. This is the part the state sets a minimum on.

Collision

Your own car, when it hits something. Carries a deductible you pick.

Comprehensive

Your own car for everything that is not a collision: deer, hail, a tree limb, theft, the windshield.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist

Pays you when the other driver has no insurance or not enough. Plenty of them are out there, and both states now build this in.

Medical payments

Medical bills for you and your passengers, whoever was at fault, without waiting on a liability claim.

Rental and roadside

A car while yours is in the shop after a claim, and a tow when it is not going anywhere. Small add-ons that get used more than any other.

The deductible is the amount you pay before collision or comprehensive pays. A higher one lowers the premium. The right one is the amount you could write a check for on a bad Tuesday.

WHERE THE GAPS HIDE

Six situations that change the answer.

A new driver in the house

A licensed teenager who lives with you needs to be on the policy, even if they mostly drive one car. Leaving them off is the gap that turns into a denied claim.

The truck that goes to work

A personal auto policy is built for personal use. Hauling for pay, carrying tools to jobs or a company name on the door can push it to commercial auto, which is written here too.

Delivery and rideshare

Driving for a delivery app or a rideshare has a gap between your personal policy and the company's. Ask before the first shift.

The trailer

Liability usually follows the tow vehicle. Damage to the trailer, the boat or the camper on it does not. Those need their own coverage.

The antique in the shed

Collector cars are written on agreed value, so the check matches the car, not a book value for a forty year old vehicle.

The student away at school

A student more than a certain distance from home without a car may earn a discount. One who took the car needs the policy to know where it lives now.

WHO WE WRITE IT FOR

Who we write it for

●  Households with several cars and several drivers
●  Teen and newly licensed drivers
●  Pickups that are personal on Sunday and working on Monday
●  Drivers who need an SR-22 or FR-44 filing
●  Drivers with a lapse, a ticket or an accident on the record
●  Antique, classic and collector vehicles
●  Families with a driver on each side of the state line

Two states, one household

A car is insured and registered where it is garaged. When a household has a driver in Mecklenburg County and one in Warren County, or a lake house across the line, that becomes two sets of rules. Because the office is licensed in Virginia and North Carolina, it is one conversation instead of two agents who do not talk to each other.

THE STATE LINE

What each state requires now

Virginia

Minimum liability limits of $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage since 1 January 2025. Liability insurance is mandatory. The old option of paying the DMV a $500 fee to drive uninsured ended in July 2024.

North Carolina

Minimum liability limits of $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident and $50,000 property damage since 1 July 2025. Underinsured motorist coverage is now included on every new and renewed policy. The DMV is notified when coverage lapses, and a lapse brings fines.

Minimums are set by the legislatures and both states changed theirs in 2025. Confirm the current figures with the Virginia DMV or the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

QUESTIONS WE GET

Before you call

Do I really need more than the state minimum?

The minimum is enough to register the car. A serious injury claim passes $50,000 quickly, and what the policy does not pay, you do. Higher limits usually cost less than people expect, and they are what an umbrella policy sits on top of.

Why is uninsured motorist coverage on my policy?

Because the other driver may have none, or the minimum. It pays for your injuries and, in some forms, your car, when theirs cannot. Both states now treat it as part of a standard policy.

My son just got his license. Does he have to be on my policy?

If he lives with you and has a license, yes. A young driver raises the premium, and leaving him off to avoid that is the kind of thing that surfaces after a wreck, which is the worst time.

Does my personal policy cover my work truck?

It depends on what the truck does. Driving to a job site is usually fine. Hauling for hire, carrying a crew, or a business name on the door can move it to commercial auto. Bring us the truck and the business and we will tell you which one it is.

Can I add a car or a driver through the form?

Call the office. A new car or a new driver is a change in coverage, and coverage is not bound through the form or by email until somebody here has confirmed it. The car is not covered because you sent the message.

Changing your coverage

For adding or deleting coverage, please call the office during business hours. Coverage is not bound through sending a request by email or using the contact form without explicit confirmation from an authorized agent or carrier.
